definition of a burmese teashop: a place of meeting; where secret dealings & transactions of sorts take place; conversations may range from anything mundane to revelational; a sojourner’s pit stop or a tired worker’s refuge; a place of deep contemplation or just to space out; has house specialities which can be surprising & delightful; addy’s kind of hangout.

what is notable: teashops are everywhere in burma. roofed or unroofed. at a proper shop space or by the street- a designated spot no less. offers free flow of burmese tea if you order at least one dish. you can sit all day and no one will ask you to leave. teashops are characteristically marked by their use of small wooden or plastic chairs and low tables, like those found in kindergarten.

i’m so thankful to have met them. they made my stay so pleasant and homely.

this next picture is taken during their nightly fellowship which takes place right outside my room. their laughter and long conversations lull me to sleep every night.

at the guest house

san rel's house special: steamed tapioca & yam (from his garden), served with tea

la peto: traditional burmese snack (mixture of beans & seeds & preserved tea leaves)

every teashop has their own house special :)

a lil something for the journey

sometimes we get our words mixed up. this is david telling me what his friend had said to an english speaking friend. his re-telling alone makes me laugh. this was one of our conversations we had while waiting for our bus, in the midst of downpour, during my very first visit to myanmar.
